Why learn Spanish?
Sol, alegría, buena comida, cultura, deporte, tradición, simpatía y cercanía ¿Necesitas más razones para aprender español? ¿Qué te parecen estas siete?:
It is the official language of 21 countries across three continents, with more than 630 million speakers of whom 520 million have native-level competence.*
It is the third most widely spoken native language in the world, with nearly 460 million native speakers, after Mandarin Chinese and Hindi.*
It is also the second most-used language on social media and the third most-used language on the Internet.*
Spanish is the third most-used language at the United Nations, the fourth most-used language in the European Union, and an official language in many other international organisations and institutions.
Studies have shown that bilingual employees with Spanish language skills often earn higher salaries, with increases ranging from 5% to 20% compared with their monolingual peers. Companies are also more likely to offer promotions and bonuses to bilingual professionals.**
According to the British Council report Languages for the Future**, Spanish ranks first among the ten most important languages to study in the United Kingdom. It also occupies the top position among languages considered most important for diplomatic, educational and cultural purposes, and ranks second among those considered most valuable for economic purposes.
In the United Kingdom, Spanish is currently the most popular modern foreign language chosen at both A Level and GCSE examinations.****
In 2025, approximately 24.6 million people were learning Spanish as a foreign language in a variety of educational settings worldwide.*

Beyond its demographic and economic importance, the Spanish-speaking world offers extraordinary cultural heritage and natural diversity: there is an entire world waiting to be discovered.
Join us at Instituto Cervantes London in person or online to learn Spanish and explore the vibrant cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

Levels
Our Spanish courses cover six progressive levels from A1 to C2 in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). These levels are divided into 30- or 60-hour modules, depending on the course format. The CEFR was developed to promote greater consistency and transparency in foreign language learning across European countries. Its objectives include enhancing mobility within Europe, facilitating the mutual recognition of language qualifications, and encouraging cooperation between educational institutions in different countries. The framework defines a series of proficiency levels that describe a learner’s ability to use a language in terms of communicative competence, productive skills (speaking and writing), receptive skills (listening and reading) and language competence for specific purposes.
By following the CEFR, our courses provide a clear, internationally recognised pathway for language development, allowing students to monitor their progress and work towards widely recognised language qualifications.
At A1 level, students can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at meeting immediate needs. They can introduce themselves and others, and ask for and provide basic personal information about where they live, their belongings, and people they know. They can interact in a simple way, provided that the other person speaks slowly and clearly and is willing to help.
Classes at this level are taught primarily in Spanish, with limited active use of English.
A1 level is divided into two sublevels: A1.1 and A1.2.
At A2 level, students can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance, such as basic personal and family information, shopping, places of interest, work, and everyday activities. They can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a straightforward and direct exchange of information on familiar and common matters.
Students are able to describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters related to their immediate needs.
A2 level is divided into three sublevels: A2.1, A2.2 and A2.3.
At B1 level, students can understand the main points of clear, standard language on familiar matters regularly encountered related to work, study, leisure, and everyday life. They can deal with most of the situations likely to arise while travelling in Spanish-speaking regions.
Students are able to produce simple, connected texts on topics that are familiar or of personal interest. They can describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes and ambitions, and briefly give reasons and explanations for their opinions and plans.
B1 level is divided into four sublevels: B1.1, B1.2, B1.3 and B1.4.
B2 level is divided into four sublevels: B2.1, B2.2, B2.3 and B2.4.
At C1 level, students can understand a wide range of demanding longer texts and recognise implicit meaning. They can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. They can use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Students are able to produce clear, well-structured and detailed texts on complex subjects, demonstrating a good command of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
C1 level is divided into five non-sequential sublevels that students may take in any order: C1.1, C1.2, C1.3, C1.4 and C1.5.
At C2 level, students can understand virtually any form of spoken language without difficulty and express themselves fluently, accurately and effortlessly, conveying finer shades of meaning with precision. They develop a command of idiomatic expressions, colloquialisms and fixed phrases and use them naturally and appropriately in speech.
Students are also able to write clear, fluent and well-structured texts in an appropriate style, as well as read and understand with ease virtually all forms of written language.
