Our library is an open and welcoming space that serves as a center for information on Spain and the Spanish-speaking world.

The José Emilio Pacheco Library at the Cervantes Institute of Chicago is named in honor of one of the most celebrated voices in contemporary Spanish-language literature and recipient of the Cervantes Prize in 2009. A poet, novelist, essayist, and translator, José Emilio Pacheco enriched generations of readers through a body of work distinguished by its literary excellence, intellectual depth, and profound reflection on history, memory, and the human experience.

Inspired by the values embodied in Pacheco’s work, the library serves as a gateway to the Spanish language and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. More than a collection of books and resources, it is a vibrant space for learning, discovery, and cultural exchange, welcoming students, researchers, educators, and all those interested in exploring the richness and diversity of Hispanic cultures.

Collections and Holdings

The library opened to the public in 1996. It inherited the collections of the former Spanish Cultural Center, which had historically been enriched through donations from various public institutions. From that moment on, the Cervantes Institute launched an acquisitions policy aimed at updating the collection and adapting it to the needs of its users.

The library’s collection is made up of approximately 30,000 volumes representing Spanish and Latin American culture. Most of the works are published in Spanish, although materials can also be found in English and in the other co-official languages of Spain (Galician, Catalan, and Basque).

The holdings are organized into different sections:

  • Reference works
  • Spanish and Latin American literature
  • Teaching and learning materials for Spanish, Catalan, Galician, and Basque
  • History, art, and social sciences
  • Children’s and young adult literature
  • English translations of Hispanic literature
  • Film, including movies and documentaries
  • Spanish and Latin American music
  • Cultural magazines and journals

In addition, the Cervantes Institute’s digital library is accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with only an internet connection required.

The Cervantes Institute digital library is a comprehensive set of online resources and services, offering access to e-books for borrowing and reading, music and audiobooks, electronic resources (databases, dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, etc.), as well as virtual reading and film clubs, among other features.

Biography of José Emilio Pacheco

José Emilio Pacheco Berny (Mexico City, 30 June 1939 – Mexico City, 26 January 2014) was a poet, novelist, essayist, and translator, and one of the most important Mexican writers of the 20th century.

He studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he began his literary activities in student magazines. He collaborated on the Ramas Nuevas supplement of the magazine Estaciones and was editor-in-chief of the México en la Cultura supplement. He also taught at universities in Mexico, the United States, Canada, and England.

His poetry, characterized by an extreme refinement of ornamental elements, stands out for its social commitment to his country. Themes such as the passage of time, life, and death run through his work. Among his most notable poetry collections are Los elementos de la noche (1963), No me preguntes cómo pasa el tiempo (1969), Los trabajos del mar (1984), Miro la tierra (1986), and Ciudad de la memoria (1989).

His narrative work is marked by experimentation with new structures and narrative techniques. Themes such as the loss and uniqueness of childhood, as well as emotional relationships, are recurrent in his writing, all framed by his social and historical concern for Mexico. As a storyteller, his notable works include the short-story collections El viento distante (1963), El principio del placer (1972), La sombra de la Medusa y otros cuentos marginales (1990), as well as the novels Morirás lejos (1967) and Las batallas del desierto (1981). His articles and essays are numerous and almost all focus on literature, although they also address political and social issues. He was also an editor and translator.

Among his awards are the Magda Donato Prize (1967), Xavier Villaurrutia Award (1973), National Journalism Prize (1990), National Prize for Arts and Sciences in Linguistics and Literature (1992), Reina Sofía Prize for Ibero-American Poetry (2009), and the Miguel de Cervantes Prize (2009).

He was a member of El Colegio Nacional (Mexico) from 1986 and a distinguished professor in the Department of Spanish at the University of Maryland.

The writer José Emilio Pacheco, winner of the 2009 Cervantes Prize, deposited a legacy in the Caja de las Letras of the Instituto Cervantes, which will remain sealed until 21 April 2110. He is one of the personalities who has left a personal item in the former vault of the institution’s headquarters.
