What is the DELE?

Official Spanish qualification

DELE Spanish Diplomas are official qualifications that certify your level of Spanish proficiency and mastery. Awarded by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, they serve as the perfect credential to demonstrate your skills in the language.

What makes the DELE exams special?

The Instituto Cervantes manages all aspects of the DELE exams, ranging from academic and administrative matters to financial ones. All operations are conducted in accordance with Royal Decrees 1137/2002, 264/2008, and 1004/2015.

What does it involve

The DELE exam tests are designed to comprehensively certify your Spanish proficiency within contexts familiar to you—such as personal, public, educational, or professional settings.

The goal? To reflect how you use the language in real-life situations.

Speak Spanish your way: all varieties are welcome

From level B1 onwards, our comprehension tests reflect the richness and diversity of Spanish, including its major varieties. For the oral tests, don't worry about the accent or variety you use! All ways of expressing yourself in Spanish are equally valid and welcome.

Additionally, these tests may be recorded to ensure both quality and transparency in the process.

The Spanish Diploma Level A1 is your ticket to demonstrating that you possess the basic language skills needed to get by in Spanish. This diploma certifies that you are able to:

  • Ask for and provide basic personal information, such as details about yourself or your daily life.
  • Interact at a basic level with native speakers, provided they speak slowly and clearly and are willing to cooperate with you.

The Spanish Diploma Level A2 attests that you have the necessary ability to function in Spanish in everyday situations close to your immediate environment. This diploma certifies that you can:

  • Engage in simple, direct exchanges of information on familiar or routine topics. You can also describe your past and aspects of your surroundings in basic terms.

The Spanish Diploma (Level B1) certifies the language user's ability to:

How to register

Registering for DELE exams is a simple process, provided you follow the instructions and adhere to the established deadlines. You can do so in two ways:

  • Online: If you are taking the exam in Spain (except for school-level exams), register via this portal.
  • At the exam center: If you are outside Spain or registering for school-level exams, complete the process at a center recognized by the Instituto Cervantes.
Documents required for registration
To complete your registration, you will need a unique, active email address and the following documents:

  • Proof of registration.

  • Original passport or official photo ID.

  • For DELE A2 candidates in Spain: original TIE and passport. EU citizens may present their EU citizen family member residence card or their original national identity document.

  • The exam notification sent by the center where you registered.
