HISPANIC STUDIES IN IRELAND
Ireland has a strong and dynamic tradition of Hispanic Studies that has experienced significant growth in recent decades.
Spanish has become one of the most widely studied foreign languages in the country, both at secondary-school and university level, fostering an extensive network of academic, cultural and scientific exchanges between Ireland, Spain and Ibero-America.
Ireland’s leading universities are home to highly regarded departments of Spanish and Hispanic Studies, including Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Maynooth University, University of Galway, University College Cork, University of Limerick and Dublin City University. These institutions carry out significant teaching and research in areas such as the Spanish language, literature, translation, applied linguistics, cultural studies, migration, historical memory and intercultural relations.
Particularly significant is the diversity of approaches found across Irish universities. Alongside traditional language and literature studies, there are specialist centres devoted to Mexican, Galician, Catalan and Basque studies, as well as initiatives focusing on multilingual education, heritage languages, and Iberian and Ibero-American studies. This academic richness makes Ireland one of the most active European settings for the study and promotion of Spanish-language cultures.

Hispanic World and Ibero-America
Ibero-America is a community made up of 22 countries in Europe and the Americas that share languages — mainly Spanish and Portuguese — as well as common roots, history and values.
The Ibero-American countries — 19 in Latin America and three on the Iberian Peninsula — work together through forums for political dialogue and cooperation, such as the Ibero-American Summits, with the aim of promoting development, strengthening democracy and fostering cooperation among their societies.
