Jorge Luis Borges Library Services
Access to the library and its collections is open to the public and free of charge. In the reading room, you can study and access the Internet (Wi-Fi), as well as the library catalog and its collections, which include movies, music, and periodicals.
To borrow materials from the library, listen to or download audiobooks, or access electronic resources, you must have a valid library card.
The library is available to answer any questions related to the language and culture of Spain and Latin America.
The international interlibrary loan service allows you to access documents from other Spanish libraries right here at the library.
Schools and interested groups can take guided tours of the library and the rest of our facilities and exhibitions by scheduling an appointment at bibny@cervantes.es.
Loan Service
- General public: $75 per year.
- Full-time students, Cervantes Institute alumni, teachers, and retirees: $35 per year.
- E-library users: €14 per yearo.
Most of the library’s collection is available for checkout, which is open to anyone with a library card. You may borrow up to 8 items (maximum of 3 videos) for the following loan periods:
- Books, CDs, and records - 14 days
- Videos / DVDs (movies) - 7 days
Those who provide proof of their status as teachers, with a valid library card, may borrow up to 12 items (maximum of 3 videos) for 15 days.
The library has a self-checkout machine in front of the circulation desk, as well as a smart return box located in the center’s lobby, which allows our users to independently manage the borrowing and return of materials.
Loans, with the exception of audiovisual materials, may be renewed twice for the same loan period, provided there are no prior reservations. Reservations will be accepted for items currently checked out by other users.
Renewals and reservations can be made at the library, by phone at 212.308.7720, via email at bibny@cervantes.es, and through the library’s online catalog.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. We will do our best to answer any questions related to Spain and Latin America. To do so, we can use our own resources (specialized staff, databases, library collections) and external sources (the Internet and other information centers).
Inquiries can be made in person at the library, by mail, or by email.
Interlibrary loan and document delivery are services that allow our library users to consult or borrow materials or receive photocopies of documents from Spanish libraries or any of the Cervantes Institute libraries around the world.
- Request Form for Users
- Request Form for External Institutions
- For more information, please feel free to contact the library by sending an email to bibny@cervantes.es
We follow the recommendations of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), which, broadly speaking, are as follows:
- Any user who holds a library card may use this service.
- The user declares that the requested document is being requested for research or study purposes.
- The loan period will be determined by the lending library; one month is most common.
- Both the service costs (fees) and the loan conditions (number of documents requested, photocopies, etc.) will be as specified by the library providing the documents.
- If the loan is made outside the Cervantes Institute Library Network (RBIC), the applicant is responsible for the corresponding shipping and return costs.
Institutions or teachers (of Spanish as well as other subjects) may request guided tours for groups of students and colleagues of the library and the rest of the Instituto Cervantes.
The format and content of the tour will be tailored, to the best of our ability, to the needs of the visiting group.
