Biography of Miguel Hernández

Miguel Hernández Gilabert (Orihuela, October 30, 1910 – Alicante, March 28, 1942). Spanish poet and playwright.

Coming from a humble background, he had to leave school at a very young age to start working; even so, he developed his talent for poetry thanks to his passion for reading classical Spanish poetry. He was a member of the literary circle in Orihuela, where he met Ramón Sijé and formed a close friendship with him.

Starting in 1930, he began publishing his poems in magazines such as El Pueblo de Orihuela and El Día de Alicante. In the 1930s, he traveled to Madrid and contributed to various publications, establishing relationships with the poets of the time. Upon his return to Orihuela, he wrote Perito en Lunas (1933), which reflects the influence of the authors he read in his childhood and those he met during his trip to Madrid.

Once settled in Madrid, he worked as an editor on the bullfighting dictionary El Cossío and on Alejandro Casona’s Misiones pedagógicas; he also contributed to major Spanish poetry magazines. During these years, he wrote the poems El silbo vulnerado (1934), Imagen de tu huella (1934), and his best-known work: El Rayo que no cesa (1936).

He played a very active role in the Spanish Civil War, and when it ended, he attempted to leave the country but was arrested at the Portuguese border. Sentenced to death, his sentence was commuted to thirty years, but he did not serve the full term because he died of tuberculosis on March 28, 1942, in the Alicante prison.

During the war, he composed Viento del pueblo (1937) and El hombre acecha (1938) in a style that became known as “war poetry.” While in prison, he completed Cancionero y romancero de ausencias (1938–1941). His work reflects influences from Garcilaso, Góngora, Quevedo, and San Juan de la Cruz.
