types of courses for teachers

Every year, more than 16,000 Spanish and other language teachers from around the world choose Instituto Cervantes to begin or further their training in Spanish language teaching, making it the world’s leading institution in the field of teaching Spanish as a foreign language (ELE).

With the aim of promoting the development of teaching competence, all Spanish as a foreign language (ELE) teacher training courses are delivered by experienced and highly regarded teacher trainers and tutors. Instituto Cervantes offers an extensive annual professional development programme for teachers worldwide, including face-to-face courses both at our headquarters in Alcalá de Henares and at Instituto Cervantes centres around the world, as well as online courses. In addition, a range of training activities is offered in collaboration with academic institutions that have received recognition from Instituto Cervantes, as well as master’s degree programmes co-organised with Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (Master’s Degree in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language) and Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (Master’s Degree in Spanish as a Second Language Teacher Training).

  • Face-to-face courses: In a blended format, with theoretical classes delivered online and practical sessions held face-to-face, Instituto Cervantes Manila offers teacher training courses for children and teenagers every year.
  • Online courses: Every year, Instituto Cervantes Manila organises its Annual Teacher Training Programme, offering three-hour online sessions on a variety of topics related to teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

  • Autonomous Teacher: These courses are aimed at teachers at an early stage of professional development, when (future) teachers have acquired basic teaching competences and have reached a sufficient level of autonomy to teach without supervision. You can find the courses for autonomous teachers offered by the headquarters here.
  • Expert Teacher: These courses are aimed at teachers who have acquired sufficient competences to deal effectively with complex situations in different contexts and are able to promote processes of transformation that have an impact on their professional environment. You can find the list of courses here.
  • Teacher Trainer: These courses are aimed at expert teachers who have the specific competences required to plan, manage and assess different types of training activities. You can find the available courses here.

In addition to these courses, Instituto Cervantes has developed a teacher accreditation system consisting of a series of diplomas that certify the professional competence of teachers of Spanish as a foreign language (ELE).
