Teacher training

Instituto Cervantes Kuala Lumpur carries out various activities related to Spanish teacher training, some independently and others in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes Manila, the centre to which it reports.

Activities organised by Instituto Cervantes Kuala Lumpur:

  • International Conference for Spanish Teachers in Kuala Lumpur: Since its reopening in 2024, Instituto Cervantes Kuala Lumpur, with the collaboration of Editorial Edinumen and Universiti Malaya, has organised two editions of the International Conference for Spanish Teachers in Kuala Lumpur. This free event aims to foster a sense of community among teachers of Spanish as a foreign language in Malaysia and to provide those interested in the field with opportunities for continuing professional development through short presentations and workshops.
  • Teacher Training Courses: In the past, Instituto Cervantes Kuala Lumpur organised initial teacher training courses. Since its reopening in 2024, none of these courses have yet been held, although there are plans to resume them soon.

Activities in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes Manila:

  • Annual Teacher Training Programme: The Annual Teacher Training Programme (FAP), organised by Instituto Cervantes Manila, consists of a series of three-hour online workshops held from March to December each year. The workshops address a wide range of topics of particular interest to teachers of Spanish as a foreign language.
  • DELE Examiner Accreditation: DELE examiner accreditation courses are aimed at all teachers of Spanish as a foreign language who wish to train as examiners for these diplomas and/or learn more about the examination in order to better prepare their students. The DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is the only official internationally recognised qualification certifying proficiency in Spanish and is recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Vocational Training. The following examiner accreditation courses are scheduled to take place:
  • Congress on Spanish as a Foreign Language in the Asia-Pacific Region (CELEAP): The fourth edition of CELEAP took place from 18 to 20 September 2026 at the prestigious Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), located in the city of Penang, Malaysia. The congress brought together teachers, researchers and Spanish-language professionals from Southeast Asia and other parts of the Pacific region to reflect on the teaching and learning of Spanish as a foreign language, share teaching experiences and practices, and discuss trends and challenges in the sector in the region within a global context of digital transformation. Once again, CELEAP was organised by Instituto Cervantes Manila and its classrooms and extensions in the region, the Spanish Education Office for Australasia and its Technical Advisory Offices in the Philippines and Thailand, as well as Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The aim is for CELEAP to become an annual event, with the host venue rotating among different countries in the region.
